Vincent: Another dependable Nigerian gone, says Kalu

Opeyemi Adesina

A former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has described the late former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Chief Ola Vincent, as a dependable Nigerian.

Kalu said with Vincent's death, the country has lost another dependable citizen who could be trusted to give his undiluted opinion on any issue, especially economic policies, without considering whose ox is gored.

Kalu, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Emeka Obasi, said that Vincent showed himself as capable of handling the pressure of his office with the sound economic policies put in place during his reign at the CBN between 1977 and 1982.

The statement added: "Despite the fact that the military was in power then, it was obvious that Chief Vincent stood his grounds in terms of policy formulation and implementation.

"No wonder Nigeria had it so good in terms of the strength of the naira against other world currencies and the stability of the economy during his tour of duty at the CBN.

"And to imagine this was during the military era when the words of the rulers were laws and not sound economic judgment and opinion."

Kalu urged Nigerians, especially those overseeing the country's economy, to imbibe the virtue of honesty as exhibited by Vincent, both in and out of office.

He added: "We have seen in this country a lot of decisions taken, which have not been for the benefit of Nigerians but for the pocket of a few Nigerians, especially those in power.

"It is even more annoying when some appointees give the wrong advice or pander to those in authority just in the bid to keep their jobs.

"These are the sort of things that have taken us to where we are.

"People who are not principled and can change their positions without battling an eyelid once money or position is involved.

"These were attributes that distinguished Vincent and they are attributes the country is in dire need of in these trying times.

May his soul rest in perfect peace as we celebrate this man of honour and integrity."
