Ocean Surge: Lagos PDP tags Fashola as arrongant, schizoid governor over comment

Opeyemi Adesina

The dust may not have settled over the recent ocean surge at kuramo Beach as the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come out to describe Governor Fashola as an Arrogant and Schizoid Governor who is now overwhelmed and may eventually be destroyed by the exaggerated Fame created by his propaganda machinery.

The description is a reaction to Governor Fashola's unwarranted assault on those who criticised the Eko Atlantic City Project as the immediate cause of the recent Ocean surge that claimed many lives and destroyed property at Kuramo beach.

The Governor while addressing reporters had come out hard on his critics, describing them as ignorant and mischievous in their assessment of the impact of the Eko Atlantic City Project on the Ocean Surge.

A statement made available to newsmen on Thursday by the Lagos State PDP Chairman Tunji Shelle, the Party stated that "Governor Fashola is only attempting to avoid any responsibility for the recent ocean Surge. The same attitude was put up by the Governor to defend cause of deaths during the protracted doctor's strike and floods in the state, to mention a few. Honestly this attitude of his is inhumane, especially coming at a time the Governor and his Party should be sober and sympathising with those who have lost loved ones and property! We are further embarrassed that a Governor, Lawyer and indeed S.A.N that ought to be "Fit and Proper" could be so reckless in speech as to disparage his own people simply because they expressed their expert opinions on an issue. The Governor is surely not an emperor that cannot be criticised and corrected. Rather than take every criticism in bad faith, the Governor and his Party should always analyse and carry out deep reflection before reacting to the criticism of their policies"

The Party opines that if the Governor postulates that only experts should comment on issues, then himself being a Lawyer by profession is not qualified to make comments on environmental matters. The party went further to reiterate its call for the Federal Government to stop the Eko Atlantic City project to forestall further loss of lives at our beaches.
"Unlike the Tree Planting exercise, this project requires proper professionalism. Except the Eko Atlantic City project is stopped, the ocean surge will be recurrent and many more lives could be lost. As we talk, the project is even being extended to Oniru and far into the open Sea. Imagine sandfilling the Ocean that far. In whose interest is this project. If really it is to open up the state, the vast Lands at Epe, Badagry, and Ikorodu areas should be cleared to open up the state and not to sandfill the Ocean. The project is even being carried out without proper Ecological & environmental impact assessment" We warn that this project must stop in order to save lagos State from a possible Tsunami. This was the same way we warned before the flood that claimed many lives but this Government waited till people died before heeding to our constructive criticisms to clear the lagos canals that are even inadequate in the state.

The Party consequently demands Governor Fashola to make public the purported Ecological & Environmental Impact assessment and the Terms of the Contract with the beneficiaries of the unpopular project within 14days for lagosians and experts to have inputs where necessary.

"Lagosisans demand to know the real beneficiaries of the Eko Atlantic City Project and especially how it will impact on their well being. Presently, the project is more of a Curse than blessing to lagosians. Consequently we demand that the victims must be adequately compensated"
